What is Afro Dance?

Afro Dance is a high-energy upbeat dance that is a mixture of street dance and African Dance. Its musicality is heavily influenced by the rhythmical and musical trends in African music such as Afro-house, Afro-beat and Afro Kuduo. Afro Dance moves are often very polycentric with each part of the body focusing on different rhythms. These techniques help dancers develop a greater mind & body connection, in turn allowing them to learn how to build a stronger connection to the music and with other around them.

How Afro Dance Started

Afro Dance is a modernised form of African Dance, which has historically been an essential part of the African Life for centuries. Whilst each type of African Dance has its origin closely related to its beliefs and cultures, they all share a common history of tightening the bonds between members of tribes, celebrating ritual activities and communicating emotions with others.

Over the past decades, African movements and rhythms have expanded to different parts of the world, which has allowed for the creation of many popular dance styles today, those of which include Salsa and Samba. In a similar way, Afro Dance has established its roots from African Dance, but has also been shaped by many modern dance styles such as House and Dancehall.
