What is Girl Style Dance?

Girl Style is a modern dance style that has evolved from the dance genres of Jazz, Funk, Dancehall and Hip Hop. It incorporates many smooth, flowing feminine movements which include waves and rolls as well as movements with clean lines and postures. The feminine energy in Girl Style can be expressed in a variety of ways to portray different types of characters. Some common examples include overconfident forms of sassiness or sensual deep feelings of sexiness.

The History of Girl’s Style

Unlike most dancing genres, Girl’s Style does not have a cultural history of its own, as it is a modernized genre that has only developed over the past few years. Most choreographies in this genre has been inspired by the feminine elements of a variety of dance genres, most commonly Jazz and Funk. Whilst there is no set foundation underlying this genre, most choreographies in this genre have trended towards unleashing an image that portrays the beauty of women.

Tips To Taking Your First Girl Style Class

Dress Comfortably

A lot of girl’s style dancers love to dress fashionably to portray their feminine beauty to others. For females - the general class attire trends towards wearing short-sleeve or long-sleeve crop tops along with sweatpants tights or shorts – depending on what season you’re in! For men – there isn't any clear trend so anything that will make you feel good and comfortable or a little bit sassy is also welcome. Whilst most people wear comfortable sneakers, some Girl’s Style classes may require students to practise in high heels so do look out for whether that class requires heels. Feel free to touch yourself up with makeup as well. But if you don’t want to dress yourself so femininely, don’t fret – no one will judge you for just wearing a comfortable tee shirt and pants!

What To Expect

Let’s talk about the of music. Upbeat Pop or slow RnB – it’s one or the other. If the teacher feels like dancing in a sassy style, expect to dance to some upbeat pop music. If the teacher feels like dancing in a sexy style, expect to dance to some slow RnB music. Most of the songs that are used in Girl’s Style dances are modern and have been quite famous in the last 5 years – which may be more exciting to dance to for young people since we would be familiar with it. Another thing to keep in mind – if the song is upbeat and the style is sassy, there is a tendency for the choreography to incorporate fast strong moves that make your body work out. If the song is slow and the style is more feminine and sexy, there is a tendency for the choreography to be less cardio-intensive and will incorporate a lot of smooth movements.

Talk To Others Taking The Same Class

One of the best things about taking girl style dance classes is the social aspect of dance. Arrive about 10-15 minutes early to settle in and introduce yourself to someone also taking the same class as you. During the class, keep the talking to a minimum, so as to not distract the teacher and other students wanting to learn. Some teachers like to stay back after class to talk to students, see if this is the case for the girl style classes you take.
